Kerala is an obvious choice for a perfect getaway in a beautiful destination with rich culture, stunning landscapes, and delicious food.

We had recently visited Kerala and were amazed by its beauty. In this 6-day Kerala travel guide, we will share our budget-friendly Kerala itinerary and also include some recommendations about the places you shouldn’t miss.

Always remember that no rule says you have to explore every place where you are going. It would be best if you planned your itinerary accordingly.

Day 1: Arrive in Cochin (Ernakulam) and Transfer to Athirappilly

Your trip to God’s own country begins once you arrive in Ernakulam (Cochin). It has good connectivity with major cities in India. You can reach Cochin via the below modes:

By Rail: This is the best option if you’re on a budget. You’ll find trains from almost all major cities in India.

By Air: The Cochin International Airport is the world’s first solar-powered airport. To save some time, a direct flight to Kochi can be a good option.

By Road: Cochin has vast road networks connected to all major nearby cities. It is one of the most scenic road trips in India.

Note: Make sure to reach Cochin before 11:00 AM, or else you won’t have enough time in Athirappilly to enjoy.

1.1 Transfer to Athirappilly:

Athirappilly Waterfalls, even known as the “Niagra of India,” are approximately 1000 feet above sea level. It is Kerala’s largest waterfall and has recently gained popularity among tourists as a result of Bollywood films shot here, particularly Bahubali.

After reaching Kochi, prepare for another beautiful 2-hour road trip that takes you through beautiful tea estates and the jungle. The road goes through the Malakkiparai and Vazhachal forest divisions and finally reaches the Athirappilly waterfalls.

1.2 Athirappilly Waterfalls Travel Guide:

Timings: 8:00 AM to 6: 00 PM

Ticket Prices: Rs. 60 per adult

1.2.a Best Time to Visit:

June to October (Preferably during Monsoon or just after the monsoon ends, as the fall will have a high flow of water at this time)

1.2.b Accommodation:

Athirappilly offers multiple stay options. It has something for all kinds of travelers, from budget rooms to luxury resorts.

1.2.c Places to visit in Athirappilly: 

  • Vanhacahl Waterfalls is located within 5 minutes driving distance from Athirappilly Waterfalls.
  • Thumboormuzhy Dam, Butterfly Park, and Hanging Bridge are some other attractions situated about half an hour’s drive from the Athirappilly Waterfalls.
Note: Kerala trips become challenging during the monsoon season; most paths are through the forest, and hilly terrain becomes risky during this time. On the contrary, the view of the waterfalls, the haze in the air, and that earthy scent are breathtaking and make it worth the risk.

Day 2: Transfer to Munnar and Prepare for Local Sightseeing

Day 2 begins early. After getting ready and finishing breakfast, leave for another 4-hour-long road journey to Munnar.

Munnar is a famous tourist destination, and the roads are well-maintained and connected. Passing through the middle of the mountain and seeing spice plantations and many small waterfalls, the pleasing austerity of the surroundings makes you feel like staying there forever.

Along the way, you will find lots of local cafes and restaurants for lunch. You must try the traditional vegetarian feast of Keralites, “SADYA.”

2.1 Accommodations in Munnar

Munnar is one of the most famous hill stations and tourist places in India. Staying here can vary based on the area you are staying in. 

1: Anachal: Around 15 km from Munnar City Centre, Anachal is best suited for the one who wishes to stay away from the city noise and enjoy the mystic clouds and nature in its true self.

2: Munnar City Center: Located at the center of Munnar City, this area is the most crowded. However, it is best for exploring the local markets and meeting new people.

3: Suryanelli: Far from the main city, where you can relax and enjoy your leisure time. Suryanelli is also popular for its adventure camps.

2.2 Activities to Do and Places to Visit in Munnar

After reaching your hotel or resort in Munnar, relax, go sightseeing, and do other activities. 

Note: Munnar is a hilly and forested area, so all tourist attractions here close by 5:30–6 p.m. So plan your day accordingly.

1: Sengulam Dam: A beautiful artificial dam surrounded by hills and peaks gives a mesmerizing view from the lakeside. You can enjoy peaceful boating away from the town. You can try the Coracle Boat Experience here.

2:  Hot Air Balloon Ride:  Enjoy the bird’s eye view of the beautiful Kerala tea plantation and the three mountain streams, Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni, and Kundala.

3: Ayurvedic Massage: You can also try Ayurvedic Messages in the cold weather of Munnar. These will rejuvenate your mind and body for the rest of the trip. 

That’s the end of your second day in Munnar. Eat good food and take some rest.

Day 3: Visit Eravikulam National Park, Tea Museums, Echo Point, and More

Today is the last day in Munnar on this trip. It is going to be an adventurous day. Make sure to plan your day and leave your hotel room early.

1: Eravikulam National Park: The first national park in Kerala, famous for the Nilgiri Tahr (Mountain Goat). Situated on the Rajamalai hills of the Idukki district, also known as Rajamalai National Park.

Timings: 8 a.m.–4 p.m.

Ticket Price: Rs. 200 per adult

Book the tickets online in advance to save yourself from standing on cue.

The bus will take you from the ticket counter to a certain point, and it will be a long walk from there to the top. The views are so beautiful that it is worth the walk.

2: Tea Museums and Tea Gardens: If you are an avid tea lover or wish to know its history, the next place you can plan to visit in Munnar could be the Tea Museums. 

Kannan Devan Hills Plantation Company Pvt. Ltd. runs a documentary showcasing the history of tea cultivation in Munnar since 1876.

You can also buy tea varieties from the nearby store they run.

Entry fees: Rs. 75 for adults and Rs. 35 for kids below 12 years. Overall, if you are an avid tea lover, this experience is worth it, as Munnar is all about Tea.

3: Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point, Top Station, etc.: The next destination in your Kerala Itinerary should be Mattupetty Dam. 

  • Mattupetty Dam is mostly crowded. Here, local people sell goods along the banks of the lake, and tourists can enjoy boat rides like Jet,  big boat rides for groups, etc.
  • With just 1.5 km in the distance, Echo Point is another picturesque tourist spot in Munnar famous for its natural echo phenomenon. You can also go boating or sit by the lake and watch the birds.
  • Top Station is an adventurous place for campers, hikers, and trekkers. You might feel like you’re among the clouds here. And on a clear day, you can get a bird’s-eye view of the valley and admire the beauty of Munnar. Amazing tea plantations, gorgeous waterfalls, and a winding trip among the mountains are a few other reasons that make Top Station a place worth visiting.

Munnar is all about Tea Gardens, majestic views of the city from the hills, and boating by the lakes and rivers. It depends on you and what places you feel like exploring. Remember, this might be your first trip to Munnar, but not the last. 

Day 4: Kolukkumalai Sunrise Point, Transfer to Thekkady; Spice Garden, Periyar National Park, Elephant Safari, etc.

Day 4 of this Kerala vacation is going to be a tipsy-topsy adventure. Your day starts early in the morning or late at night, around 2 a.m. 

If you plan to visit Kolukkumalai, the World’s largest tea plantation, book the jeep safari well in advance. Jeep safari charges are Rs—500 per person. Do finalize the amount before boarding; they may ask for a higher amount after the ride.

Kolukkumalai is famous for its Tea Plantation, mesmerizing views, and sunrise above the clouds. This place is a traveler’s paradise. The sunrise view from the top is rated among the best in India.

4.1 How to reach Kolukkumalai:

Plan a Jeep Safari to Kolukkumalai or opt for trekking only if you have experience.

The weather may change suddenly and get very cold and rainy. So, carry your jackets, caps, and raincoats to keep yourself warm and dry. If it is already raining, you can skip this, as the clouds will cover the sun and no sunrise will be seen.

Also, there are lots of leeches on top of Kolukkumalai sunrise point; wear full-length pants to be safe from them. 

4.2 Transfer to Thekkady:

The road conditions in Kerala are quite amazing. Driving through the blue skies, admiring the lush green forests, and feeling the cool breeze on your face. You can experience this scenic road trip from Munnar to Thekkady.

Thekkady is a town in the Idukki district situated at about 700m above sea level and is a retreat for those who love wildlife, adventure, and nature.

On the way to Thekkady, you may come across some Spice Gardens that you can visit to learn more about various herbs. You can also purchase organic spices there and take them with you.

Tickets cost Rs. 100 per person for a short half-hour to one-hour stay in the garden.

4.3 Things to do in Thekkady:

Thekkady takes you a step closer to nature and gives you a memorable wildlife experience.

1: Periyar National Park: The Park has a picturesque artificial 100-year-old lake famous for its dense Western Ghats forest and wild animals like Elephants, Wild Pigs, Sambhar, Deer, tigers, etc.

Periyar National Park is also home to different species of mammals, birds, reptiles, etc.

The best way to explore the sanctuary is by taking a Boat Cruise. Periyar Lake is renowned for its boating activities among tourists.

Although it is uncertain whether you will see any wild animals from the boat, if you are lucky, you may spot herds of elephants, boars, deer, and more near the water’s edge.

To increase your chances of sighting the animals, it is advisable to take the upper deck of the boat. Additionally, it is recommended to arrive at the lake half an hour early to secure your preferred seat.

2: Elephant Ride and Bath: Thekkady is home to India’s largest wildlife sanctuary. In addition to boat cruising, you can also partake in elephant rides and bathing.

Several places in Thekkady organize these activities. You can choose ‘Elephant Junction,’ which is located approximately 5 kilometers away from the Kumily bus stand.

Elephant Junction is a place where you can engage with elephants and interact with them while participating in their activities.

They offer a variety of activities, including elephant baths, rides, plantation visits, jungle safaris, trekking, and more.

Elephant Ride and Bathing

We highly recommend trying the Elephant bath. If you decide to do this, remember to carry an extra pair of clothes. It’s a short but enjoyable experience.

3: Kathakali Dance and Martial Arts: Kerala is known for its rich culture and art forms, including one of the world’s oldest art forms, Kathakali. Both Kathakali and Kalaripayattu performances can be witnessed throughout Kerala. However, Thekkady offers a unique experience.

Kathakali is a group dance form where the artist takes on different roles based on different themes from Hindu Mythology, especially The Mahabharata and Ramayana.

Kalaripayattu is known as the mother of all martial arts. It has a history of nearly 3,000 years. It is a group act performed with weapons.

1. Kathakali:

Show 1 Timing: 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM

Show 2 Timing: 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM

2. Kalaripayattu:

Show 1 Timing: 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM

Ticket Price: Rs. 200 per person, per show

Note: Covering both Periyar National Park and Elephant Junction in one day is a bit tiring, rather challenging, and not possible. Pre-decide what you really feel like and plan accordingly.

This is the end of Day 4 in your Kerala itinerary. Enjoy the evening at your hotel and relax.

Day 5: Jungle Walk, Transfer to Alappuzha, Backwater Boat Cruise, Houseboat, etc.

Day 5 in God’s Own Country begins with another adventure. If you wish to explore the wildlife of Thekkady nearby, you can go on a Jungle Walk. 

Periyar National Park organizes this 4-5 km short-term trail, which is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. A maximum of six people, including a guide, are permitted.

If you wish to skip this trek, it’s better to get ready and leave for your final destination on this Kerala Tour, i.e., Alappuzha (or Alleppey).

5.1 Transfer to Alappuzha:

The distance between Thekkady and Alappuzha by road is approx. 150 km, which takes around 4 hours. Also known as “Venice of the East”, Alappuzha has a network of canals and waterways, and it is connected by the Arabian Sea in the west.

As you come closer to the city, you might come across some traffic. The roads in the city are narrow and surrounded mainly by canals or paddy fields on the sides.

5.2 Accommodations in Alappuzha:

Alappuzha has many options for where to stay. From beautiful resorts to pocket-friendly hotels, all of them look surreal, just like the Backwaters.

Among these, the most famous option is the Houseboat in the backwaters. These are luxury boats equipped with bedrooms, kitchens, living areas, and other amenities. It gives you a full tour of the backwaters while you are relaxing on the boat. 

5.3 Things to do in Alappuzha:

This town in Kerala is famous for its beautiful beaches (similar to South Goa), blue lagoons, and endless backwaters. These are some popular places that have attracted tourists from around the globe.

1: Backwaters Boat Cruise: This is something you cannot skip when coming to Alleppey. The backwaters are the heart and soul of this town.

Alleppey Backwaters are extremely popular for their magnificence and scenic view of the surrounding coconut groves, paddy fields, and quacking ducks floating with you. 

You might come across many rustic villages on the route with people going about their day-to-day tasks. 

The backwaters tour on this Kerala trip will allow you to enjoy Mother Nature while also learning about life in this part of India.

2: Mullakkal Rajeshwari Temple: Nearly 500 years old, the temple was built in the traditional Kerala style with no roof over the deity. Situated at the heart of Alleppey town, this famous temple does not allow men to wear anything on the upper body. 

There are lots of temples in Alleppey, but this will be the nearest to visit.

3: Marari and Alappuzha Beach: Alleppey is a coastal city surrounded by canals and lagoons. It has several mesmerizing beaches. 

Marari Beach is among the best beaches in Kerala. It is approximately 11 kilometers from Alappuzha and is one of the best places to stay with family. The water is clean and safe to swim in and enjoy.

Alappuzha Beach is close to the town and popular among tourists. This beach hosts several events like the Alappuzha Beach Festival, the sand art festival, and more. It has a lighthouse, which is famous among tourists.

Day 6: Transfer to Kochi, Fort Kochi, Chinese Fishing Nets, and St. Francis CSI Church

Today is the last day of this memorable Kerala vacation. As you are going home today, there’s nothing much to do. You can either visit some local markets in Alleppey or plan to explore Kochi.

If you plan to visit Kochi, check out of your hotel early and transfer to Kochi. 

Kochi is a port city that was once a spice trading center in the 14th century. It is also known as the “Queen of the Sea.” Kochi is one of India’s oldest European colonies, as evidenced by monuments and sculptures.

6.1 Things to do in Kochi:

Kochi is the most populated city in Kerala, with approximately 6,80,000 people. It is famous among tourists because of its history, which can also be felt today.

1: St. Francis CSI Church: This church holds great importance as it is the place where the famous explorer Vasco Da Gama was buried. It is an architectural marvel that was inspired by both Dutch and Portuguese designs.

2: Fort Kochi: The only place in the world (except China) where you can see the Chinese fishing nets. The city is also known as the Queen of the Arabian Sea.

The whole area around Fort Kochi is filled with ancient architectural buildings.

3: Lulu Mall: One of the largest hypermarkets in India with over 68000 sq. m. Lulu Mall has over 250 outlets.

There is not much to do here; explore the mall, shop if you want, eat in a restaurant, and relax.

Day 6: Departure from Cochin
